Freestyle Football - Is it the New Skateboarding & Freestyle Motocross?

Today's blog is about my vision of where I think Freestyle Football will be heading in the next few years. In a way it was sparked by a blog from Tom Karlsson who put together a comparison between Freestyle and the Skateboarding which I tend to back up. I was involved with skateboarding before it went boom in Australia and the comparisons are there for sure. I would add in another sport to the mix and that is Freestyle Motocross.

Lets look into SK8 & FMX first and why they are so popular and went 'boom' as it where. Firstly they are action sports, they went against the norm, the participants were looked at as rebels, tattoos, street clothing, crazy insane tricks, pushing the boundaries of sport and also life aswell. Visually they are spectacular to the eye and look even better when slowed down on TV although to the general John Smith in the street they sometimes cannot tell the difficulty and difference between the tricks. Both of these sports take so much dedication to learn you don't just 'learn a trick' in a day and the tricks that look so spectacular are often the easiest and the ones the hardest, just flying legs arms etc. Frustrating for the hardcore participants. What I think set these sports on there road to fame and fortune was of course the ESPN X Games which pooled all so called 'Extreme' Sports together under one roof put it in front of the masses, got some big ass sponsors on board paid some good prize money and the rest as they say is history. People said though it was a fad they would run out of tricks ie: backflip was impossible etc so was the the 900. How wrong have people been! It is still around now and the young kids we brought through skateboarding from the age of 10 through our Showdown Skate Comps (Pedro Barros, Shane O'Neill, Jake Duncombe etc) are now probably millionaires living the dream in the US. The other area that made these sports big was the sponsors. Little clothing brands popped up all over the place they sponsored local rippers, gave them some free clothes, sponsored local competitions, made some amazing videos and then all of a sudden skate shops were born. It was an amazing time and the participation rates were huge. Skate then was accepted as 'cool' by the general population which meant more money for the skaters and eventually the big three or four surf companies swallowed them up and to me, lost the essence of what it was about. I got out of skate in 2007 so cannot say what has happened since but we had about 8 years of boom for the sport.

Now does all of that sound familiar for Freestyle Football and also the sports of Panna, 2on2, 3on3 Football with a few slight differences. Well it does to me and in my next blog I will let you know how I see it going down, as it were. No matter what people say Freestyle has a very big brother 'Football' to help push this sport into the next level very quickly. When I started in Freestyle Football back in 2008 to be honest it didn't really have much respect with normal footballers, to be honest jealously I think was the reason, but now with our Regular Football Academy being case in point, we are seeing new Freestylers born and it is a good feeling and a great starting point. With our new sponsor FIFA Street on board next Friday I will publish how I think the Freestyle Community can pull together and help market and push the sport to the next level.

Why you should play Panna and 3 on 3 Football?

I seem to be going back to my roots of being a personal trainer now that I have set up the Trick Star Football Own the Ball Academy. Hard to believe I know now by looking at me now, but back in the glory days I used to know a thing or two about fitness and also playing football.

Traditionally football coaches have used running sessions for interval training and pre season fitness. However, using small sided games like Panna & 3 on 3 is now more often recommended by the powers that be, as an ideal training method for improving fitness, competitive performance and technique in football.

It has also been suggested that match-specific small sided games can effectively improve the fitness of the cardio-vascular system whilst mimicking match-specific skill requirements. I can prove to this fact by the amount of people that have come out of the Panna Cage after just 3 minutes on there knees, as there is no restbite in the cage it makes you play. With at least 50 touches in 3 minutes it has to improve your touch, it is also great fun and increases player motivation, training the capacity to perform skills under pressure and a reduced number of training injuries.

With 3 on 3 played on a small 15m x 15m pitch the game should be played in triangles, just like what you would see a good 11 a side teams play, this creates opportunities. This game can also be very anaerobic which again is great for fitness and because of the small space requires Tricks, Control, Speed & Movement to score goals and create opportunities.

These games really originate from Holland who in the past have produced very skilful players from these methods. It seems now that the rest of the world is catching on and to be honest Australia is some way behind in understanding the benefits of these small sided games, but Trick Star Football will continue its crusade to improve players technique.

Finally it still baffles me that coaches have you running around a field without the ball at your feet. It is no wonder that some players when they come to us are scared of the ball but after a few weeks they dont want to stop playing with it which I guess at the end of the day why we call our Academy 'Own the Ball'

Day 4 - WFFC Tour KL

Today was all about planning the timing schedule along with the tv plot. Met with TV station no real dramas there then had the 5 hour planning meeting. It went very well and will be the backbone to a successful event. After this we launched the U Stream channel with lots of interviews from the behind the scenes staff. Everyone is pumped about it. It was then time for the welcome dinner at the hotel, had a big chat with Sean who came over, have so much respect for him he has such a presence and really is pushing the whole Panna and Freestyle scene in the right direction. Also played the milking the cow game, man it is so Funny. Stuart from F3 Asia then offered to take us out to the heart of KL to experience the nightlife so 5 of us drove in to the Beach Club. This place is hilarious with 9 females to 1 man!!! Thing is these are working girls!!!! Everyone behaved themselves but the funniest moment was when the police pulled up outside all the girls scattered, were on mobile phones it was utter panic, we were standing there amazed, reason for the panic. Most of the girls are illegal immigrants and thought the place was being raided. So funny!

Day 3 - WFFC Tour KL

Finally sorted wifi this morning :) 1st trip of the day was to the tm helipad for a photo shoot withe guys our group was bevs, abbas, andrew. Hate heights 54 floors up but was ok until abbas backflipped slammed his foot so hard the pad shook!!!! Guys then put on a show downstairs in lobby andrew pulled off an insane combo which we got on film. Sick! Next onto the national indoor stadium for a function with the prime minister. Was along wait before the show so we had free food had what I thought was shredded chicken curry, turned out it was anchovies !!!! Guys did a great show on stage some really good innovative stuff pity the crowd didnt give much applause as they were too busy filming with mobile cameras!! Straight from there we went to press conferemce at the chilli restaurant was packed with press so hopefully will get some good press. Guys as usual did a street show with the local malay freestylers who watched in awe. I challenged nam to take on kamalio in a panna match no result but tge guys went onto panna locals 4 secs was quickest even luki managed a panna! Rain came but bevs and petike kept freestyling in it. The chilli flavoured noodles and chicken were only rated 2 but made my lips burn :)
On driving back to hotel we had a huge thunderstorm with aquaplaning cars but it was only a light shower!!!
Had a nice dinner with steve elias when out the corner of his eye he spotted Palle on the stage dancing with the resident band (good looking mini skirted phillapino girls!) he brought the house down. This was followed by an impromtu show by andrew, kamalio and bevs which brought the house down!!! When it came to paying the bill Andrew was caught out trying to pay with vietnamese bills. Wonder how he managed to get scammed like that!!!

Day 2 - WFFC Tour KL

Wow today was meetings, meetings and more meetings. Started at 9am finished at midnight no breaks. Today myself, adriano and lucaso scheduled the whole event. It will be going live to 18 million people over asia and yours truly is the host mc :) The intricut detail in this event is amazing and will hopefully provide the best freestyle event ever. Freestylers are having a ball & the atmosphere is amazing!! Breaking News PALLE is coming to Australia for 3 months from October. To my wife sorry I haven't spoken this is crazy busy but great. Luv u. Tomorrow we are meeting the Malaysian prime minister and going to a helipad to film some freestyle, then the Press Conference, so another big day!!

Day 1 (9/11) - WFFC Tour KL

Wow what a full on exciting day. Special thanks to start with to the age newspaper who kindly ran a 9/11 tribute and gave them to passengers on a plane. Nice touch... Not. Great flight with emirates managed to sleep for 4 hrs time went quickly and Bevs & I arrived early in Kuala Lumpur. Really big airport very nice, lots of shops etc breezed through immigration, baggage etc
Driving through KL you first of all realise that indicating to change lanes is too hard just move no problem! The city itself is pretty clean to be honest, its very humid and spread out
Arrived at our hotel Doubletree by Hilton which is a very swanky one in heart of KL. Met by Connie from organisors Brainchild who by the way have done an amazing job here everything is so professional. Dan Wood then came down, F3 President good to see him again.
Once I had a shower the day was full on. Dan updated on event so far. We travelled to venue to put on a show. Met fellow organisors Jon Wong & Adriano Franco my co host from South Africa we went through event day logistics, tv etc, then it was if driving again for another PR stunt meeting up with Nam the Man Charly & Bevs again who were working hard, lunch at Nandos, into chinatown for more gorilla freestyle pulled a massive crowd Bevs pulled a Palle ATW i missed filming it sorry bevs!!! Then we got stuck in crazy traffic again gridlock!!! We got to a crazy futsal centre and the F3 presidents took on brainchild ans smashed them with some amazing football. For those people that say you cant do that in game, we did and it was amazing, some of Nams pannas were amazing we won somthing like 29-12 great day ended with beers with nam and his girlfriend & ads.
Majority of freestylers came at midnight met up then off to bed
Amazing 1st day this is going to be an epic week

World Freestyle Football Championship Tour Malaysia

In the wee hours of tomorrow morning, Bevs & I are finally setting off for our long awaited trip to Malaysia for the launch of the first ever World Freestyle Football Championship Tour. There's no doubt we both have a lot of prep to do for this massive event, but we're definitely up for the challenge :)
